#500 (Imperial India Pale Ale) – Nøgne Ø (Nogne O), 10% ABV – 0.5L, (Grimstad, Norway)

on the front-right label:

“Nothing is like celebrating your own milestones. This is a celebration of our 500th batch of ale. It was brewed with joy and splendor; the brewer wore a suit, and a TV station filmed the event. As a base for this ale, we have elected to play with numbers: 5 hops, 100 IBUs, 10% alcohol by volume. Indeed it is an Imperial India Pale Ale. Big and bold. Great for a celebration!”

Fruit IPA – American: Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin

This week’s beer is the legendary Grapefruit Sculpin, and although you can’t buy it in the UK it’s something I had to include on this blog. I’ve always wanted to try this beer and luckily got my fair share in California. Ballast Point is located in San Diego, they brew the legendary Sculpin IPA and decided one day they’d add Grapefruit to it to complement the already Citrusy flavours of the brew.

Let’s start with Ballast Point‘s description:

Our Grapefruit Sculpin is the latest take on our signature IPA. A double white with brett and aged in wine barrels: haaaallo complexity! Pours very murky, opaque and light copper in colour. Small bubbles climb the inside of my glass as the head fades to a whispy ring of white. The sharp funky nose marries beautifully with the red wine bouquet. Again, on the palate the two flavour of funk and deep fruit mingle beautifully. This beer drinks more like a fine wine than a beer with its with low carbonation, complex flavours, dry tannic finish…
