For the best pub lunch in Gauteng, look no further than Black Horse Breweries in Magaliesberg! The pub and brewery are located in an old stable building that has been skillfully upgraded to a 3-story dream of stone walls, wooden floors and impossibly large windows. Outside, there are plenty of tables under the Pecan Nut trees. But don’t be fooled! There may be a lot of tables, but if you don’t book ahead you may not ever get one. At least not on the weekend.

Artesian – The World’s Best Bar?

For 2 years running now, Artesian has taken home the crown of ‘World’s Best Bar’ awarded by Drinks International magazine.  A track record like that meant i just had to see what all the fuss was about, so i stopped by for some pre-dinner drinks.



Artesian is housed at the Langham Hotel on Portland Place (right near Oxford Circus) & inside, its design, style & vibe are all fab.  The lounge bar occupies a chic space with a very nice balance of subtle grandeur and cosiness.



I’ll admit i was a tad apprehensive beforehand, expecting the atmosphere might be somewhat flat & stuff, akin to several other swanky hotel bars in town – in fact i was pleasantly surprised.  Upon arriving, with no table seats available we were kindly asked to perch at the bar until a space opened up.  To my surprise (given the bar looked packed), the wait was less than 10 mins for a table in the end – people seem to…

Review: Colaba Social


Being in your late 20s, going out drinking on a Saturday night hardly seems appealing. Battling drunk crowd, waiting in queues for drinks and the blaring music at pubs is not my idea of fun. But the much-talked about Colaba Social had to be given a try. So, we decided to check out the place on a Saturday afternoon.

After successfully running in cities such as Delhi and Bangalore, Social has opened in Mumbai in one of the posh areas of the city. Located behind Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Colaba Social is a mix of many things. It’s a café during the day, a pub at night and also promotes itself to be a hub for freelancers who can come and work there.

WVRST is one of the best. 

We attempted to go to WVST during June’s Cider Week, but there was a huge line-up that weekday, so we went to the nearby Bier Markt instead. However, I wasn’t willing to give up on WVRST, so we returned in the middle of a weekday afternoon when my better half was off work and we had the place practically to ourselves. Some might argue that WVRST is not a pub, that it is a modern German-style beer hall, they might have a point, but, as I’ve written before, those people can set up their own blog about pubs and let me enjoy this treasure all by myself.

The Culpeper – Spitalfields E1


IMG00574-20140928-1159Next to the magnificent Toynbee Hall, on a busy corner of Petticoat Lane and Commercial Street, The Culpeper is a recent refurbishment of an old East End Spitalfields boozer. It’s now a brasserie style gastropub with stripped back oak doors, large industrial windows, reclaimed lighting, retro furniture,a long turquoise leather couch, and a zinc-topped central bar with ceramic beer taps – oh, and a rooftop veggie garden!

IMG00576-20140928-1228We tried out the Sunday lunch this weekend after a shopping trip through Petticoat Lane market. Starting out with the complimentary sourdough and homemade anchovy butter, followed by a whole globe artichoke with a fantastic warmed crab butter to dunk the leaves in.
